Simos Papafingos is a probationary lieutenant on board a freighter ship captained by an irredeemable and drunkard captain.
With the help of the kind-hearted boatswain, Fourtounas, he agrees to assist Lieutenant Manos Saris.
Manos is obliged to marry the sister of a former colleague, Maro, whom he believes to be unattractive and older, having never seen her before.
