It all starts in the 1830s when young George Stephenson engineered the first locomotive, and the first railway networks followed up before long. The railway becomes a key factor in the development of both the trade and the military power of countries, offering the possibility of rapid transportation of troops and munitions. Thus, railways spread out rapidly in Europe and soon enough reach our country as well.

"The railway connection between Athens and Thessaloniki"
Episode 7
Athens and Thessaloniki. The two largest cities in Greece, which are five hundred kilometers apart. And yet, such a long distance is now covered by train in just 4 hours, forming one of the most important transport routes in Greece. This is due to the development of the Piraeus-Demerlis-Synora Railway, the so-called “Larissaikos”. We travel on the rails of Larissaikos, which, through beautiful routes, which lead us on the slopes of the sublime mounts Oeta and Othrys, as well as the grasslands of the Thessalian plain. We witness the technical difficulties created by the topography of central Greece in designing the rails, as well as the intelligence and capability of the Larissaikos engineers, who managed to overcome these problems and, finally, realize the connection between Athens and Thessaloniki.
