Series of cultural and historical documentaries.

This specific episode of the series “Paraskinio” follows the course of director Tonia Marketaki, going through her cinematic output.

It includes a clip with a speech by Tonia Marketaki from the event held in her honor at the Aetopouleio Cultural Center of the Municipality of Chalandri (4/3/1992), while elements of her career are drawn from the presentation text at the same event by Achilleas Kyriakidis.

Through excerpts from a radio show by T. Marketaki and interviews with her, she refers to her relationship with the cinema and to what pushed her to become a director, her childhood experiences, and her influences from her family environment.

Elsewhere, she talks about the Greek language and the use of speech in her creations, and analyzes elements of her film “Ioannis o Viaios” (John the Violent) with references to the stimuli of her childhood—e.g., children’s novels—that acted as sources of inspiration for her.

She also comments on her film “The Price of Love” (1983) and the subject it deals with.

In the documentary, there is also reference to the period when T. Marketaki worked as an arts reporter and film critic for the newspaper “To Vima” (during the 1960s), to her work in Greek Television and the TV series “Lemonodasos” (The Lemon Grove, 1977), as well as her directing career in the theater (1980).

During the show, clips from the films of T. Marketaki are shown, along with photographic and printed archival material. Also included are shots from the 4th Thessaloniki Greek Film Festival (1963) and from her award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival of 1973.

The song “Love and Death” was written in 1994 by the band Chainides in memory of Tonia Marketaki.
