A peaceful greengrocer, after persistent pressure from his wife, agrees to use the gold pounds his late Jewish partner had hidden in the basement. A teacher informs him that he is of noble Franks descent and that he inherits the duchy of Athens. The greengrocer moves to a tower and with his partner's fortune, he lives a life of luxury. However, in reality, he longs for his old simple life.

His daughter is in love with the son of a politician from an aristocratic family but struggles to reconcile with her father's "humble" past. The intervention of a friend and colleague of her father will help to set things right.
