Kate and Alex are a couple living in New York who run a successful store specializing in retro furniture. They have a teenage daughter, Abby, and their apartment has started to feel a bit small for the three of them. However, they own the adjacent unit, and once the apartment becomes vacant, they plan to knock down a wall and expand their space. Andra, their tenant, is an elderly woman with a bad attitude who doesn't seem to want to leave anytime soon, and Kate and Alex think they might have to wait for her to die, since eviction would be too awkward. Hoping to make the most of the situation, Kate tries to befriend Andra and her fiercely protective granddaughter, Rebecca, but Andra isn't particularly interested in making new friends, and Rebecca's sister, Mary, is not much easier to get along with. Furthermore, Kate and Alex are struggling to communicate with Abby, who has her own issues with her self-image.
