Episode 5
This episode features the third and final part of the musical journey in the Serres region, dedicated to the songs and dances of the villages of Oreini, Alistrati, Vamvakofyto and Herakleia-Sidirokastro.
The group from Oreini perform their very characteristic polyphonic songs sung by women, as well as their representative local dances, accompanied by the gaida and the daire (giant tambourine). They tell us about their wedding customs, the old instrumentalists, their costumes and local culinary tradition.
With the participation of the following musicians: Zacharias Bourvanis (gaida) and Tasos Fourlakis (daire, davul). Singing by: Maria P. Bourvani, Maria E. Bourvani, Vaso Bourvani, Maria Kiriani, Evangelia Bourvani. Dancers from the Cultural Association ""Residents of Oreini"" of Serres (curated by: Zacharias Bourvanis).
Alistrati is represented by musicians Vasilis Karakousis (gaida) and Dimitris Ademis (daire), alongside a group of local singers (Dimitra Gourniki, Dimitra Komilioti, Vasilis Kountouras, Georgios Kordokouzis, and Nikos Marinidis).
Anastasia Faka presents the special identity of the village, Vasilis Karakousis talks about the gaida tradition and researcher and teacher of traditional dance Vasilis Terzis speaks about the dance and singing repertoire, the local dishes and the rapport between musicians and dancers. With the participation of dancers from the Folklore Club of Vlachs & Friends of Lailia of the Prefecture of Serres (curated by: Vasilis Terzis).
The performance of the group from Vamvakofyto takes us from the gaida to the zurna, both accompanied by the davul, in a series of the most representative dances of the region. With the participation of the following musicians: Aristeidis Dramalis (zurna), Ilias Stampoulis (zurna) and Giannis Dramalis (davul). We also listen to a group of elderly people sing the very distinctive polyphonic songs of the region, without instrumental accompaniment. Singing by: Sofia Stoila, Katina Kouliali, Maria Tsintsiou, and Dimitris Kiosses.
Andreas Gkenios talks about the village and Athanasia Kouliali refers to the leading dancer and the importance of the handkerchief in the region’s dances. With the participation of dancers from the Cultural Folklore Club of Vamvakofyto (curated by: Ilias Omiriadis).
The show ends in the region of Herakleia and Sidirokastro, where the zurna is predominantly coupled with the davul. With performances by the extraordinary virtuosos Giannis Malamas (zurna), Christos Malamas (zurna) and Ilias Dimanos (davul).
Vasilis Terzis talks about the peculiarities of local dances, the position of the instrumentalists, the role of the davul and the close rapport between musicians and dancers. With the participation of dancers from the Folklore Club of Vlachs & Friends of Lailia of the Prefecture of Serres (curated by: Vasilis Terzis).
