"Percussive Sound"
Episode 5
The show takes us on a journey with rare sounds. It transports us to the past, to the beginning of the creation of sounds and rhythms. To the sound of percussion instruments.
The history of percussion dates back to the depths of time. The percussive sound was created along with humanity, and it is certain that percussion instruments appeared in all cultures. The first "percussive" sound a human may have heard is the beat of their own heart. Later, the need to "reproduce" and create sounds led humans to create the first improvised percussion instruments, which, along with their voice, "composed" their first "musical" sounds. The clapping of hands together and on our body, the strong "stomp" of feet on the ground, the rubbing and striking of stones and wood together, to emphasize or keep the rhythm, may represent the oldest and most spontaneous form of organic music. Primitive percussion made from natural materials and various drums, in large numbers and variety, have been used for thousands of years by people from all continents, in rituals, dances, wars, and other activities, and to this day, many cultures retain their magical and ritualistic significance.
The show features the virtuoso percussionists of the "front line" – Michalis Klapakis, Vangelis Karipis, Andreas Pappas, Kostas Meretakis, and Petros Kourtis – who share their knowledge of percussion as well as the feelings behind their countless beats.
The show explores the magical world of percussion sounds and instruments and documents the process of their creation by the skilled artisans who make them.
It showcases the secrets of percussion construction by the specialized craftswomen Anastasia Mamali and Kleio Xirou in their workshops, meets their global family, and dances to the rhythm with the percussion masters. At the same time, the show examines the various types of rhythms that exist and that relate to human emotions, presenting the role of percussion in various customs, traditions, and rituals. On its musical journey, the show "hears" the pure sound of percussion, and through the rhythmic sequence of their beats, it discovers that the human body itself is a percussive musical instrument, with its heart beating in many different rhythms!
