"Tampahaniótika"
Episode 4
The journey of the show leads to Chania, Crete, to present the unique musical character of this beautiful city. The camera meets two important musical virtuosos, Stelios and Leonidas Lainakis, and two distinctive musical instruments: the laouto (lute) and the boulgari. These two musicians combine in their creation the idioms of Western Crete, expressed through the laouto, and the idioms of the East, expressed through the boulgari, which has gained a special identity in the city of Chania with the renowned "Tampahaniótika." In their case, these two musicians demonstrate the close relationship between the two stringed instruments, which reflect two different cultural communities. The laouto represents the traditional music of the countryside of Chania and the Selino region, where it predominates as a solo instrument, while the bougari represents the Eastern folk and urban tradition of the cities and rebetiko. The musical genre known as "Rebetiko of Crete," called "Tampahaniótika," derives its name from the city of Chania. This genre flourished during the period of coexistence between Christians and Muslims in the early 20th century.
