Historic Dramatic Ethography
The film revolves around the life of the wealthy French Duchess and passionate philhellene, Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun. She leaves Nafplio, the first capital of the newly established Greek State, where she had lived since 1829, and moves to Athens with her young daughter, Eliza, sometime around 1834. When Eliza dies after an unfortunate love affair with the bandit Bibi, Duchess Sophie decides to embalm her body and keep it in one of the rooms of the tower, living with the memories of the happy days of the past. However, on December 19, 1847, an uncontrollable fire destroys the tower completely, and the embalmed body of her daughter is incinerated, an event that profoundly shakes the Duchess's mental state.
