The Oscar-winning Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) stars as Don Diego de la Vega, who, as the masked swordsman Zorro, was a champion of the Mexican people against the tyranny of 19th-century Spanish rule, represented by the ruthless governor Montero (Stuart Wilson). However, Montero's criminals find him, kill his wife, imprison him, and kidnap his daughter, Elena. Twenty years later, when he learns that Montero has returned to California with the goal of seizing power—and that his daughter has grown up as the Governor’s child—Don Diego escapes from prison. Guided by Don Diego, an orphan named Alejandro (Antonio Banderas), who had once helped him as a child, transforms into a new Zorro. Together, they will fight for Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and seek sweet revenge against Montero.
