Documentary, produced in Australia [Fork Films], 2024.
Through rare photographic archives and captivating personal narratives, this unique documentary explores a relatively unknown aspect of the history of Lemnos and the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) expeditionary force, which fought alongside Great Britain and the other Allied Powers in World War I.
In March 1915, exactly 110 years ago, the first arrivals of thousands of Allied troops were recorded on Lemnos, as the island was transformed into a base for the Gallipoli campaign. The bay of Moudros became the anchorage for one of the largest fleets ever assembled in modern history. Lemnos developed into a crucial support base for the troops throughout the campaign, with hospitals, supply units, rest areas, and recovery facilities.
According to the film’s director, "The ANZACs in Lemnos found a generous people and a peaceful island that provided them with tranquility and solace, allowing them to rest and recover from the horrors of Gallipoli."
