Biographical drama co-produced by the USA and Germany.
It's 1967, and 17-year-old Susanna Kaysen is like many teenagers: confused, insecure, struggling to understand the rapidly changing world around her. However, the psychiatrist she meets gives this behavior a name—Borderline Personality Disorder—and sends her to Claymore Hospital. There, Susanna enters a shadowy world of eccentric young women, including the charming sociopath Lisa, the spoiled "daddy's girl" Daisy, and Polly, a burn victim. Guided by the unpretentious nurse of the ward, Valerie, and the head psychiatrist of the hospital, Dr. Wick, Susanna must choose between the world of those inside the institution and the often difficult reality outside.
The film is based on Susanna Kaysen's autobiographical book, with Angelina Jolie winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.
