Today:
"Alexandros Papadiamantis"
This episode of the series "Greek Writers and Their Times" presents the work of the great Skiathian prose writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851–1911), alongside the historical events of his time.
The program provides information about his birthplace, Skiathos, his priestly family background, his studies at the School of Philosophy in Athens, and his professional engagement in translation for financial survival.
University professor Fotis Dimitrakopoulos discusses Papadiamantis' work and vast literary output, calling him “the greatest Greek writer.” It is noted that his novels mark the end of the Greek Romantic era, while his short stories introduce Greek realism and realist ethnography.
Papadiamantis emerges as an exceptional observer of human psychology and social customs. The program highlights his extensive knowledge of Greek and foreign languages and explores the role of religiosity in his work—which, as emphasized, is not to be confused with bigotry or superstition, but rather reflects his deep and genuine faith in Orthodoxy.
A central theme in his writing is the portrayal of women, whether in a demonic form, as in The Murderess, or as objects of desire, as in Dream on the Wave.
The episode concludes by showcasing references to Papadiamantis' work by Kostis Palamas, Odysseas Elytis, and Giorgos Seferis, underlining the prominent place he holds in Greek literature.
