Series about the Greek music tradition.
The aim is to record and promote to the audience the richness, variety, and expressiveness of our musical heritage, through the local musical idioms as well as its modern potential in the urban environment of the big city.
Today:
"Christmas at Mario's"
"Salt of the Earth" and Lambros Liavas present a festive tribute to the classic folk songs of the golden 1950s.
The occasion is the inclusion of rebetiko and folk music tradition on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, following a proposal by the Ministry of Culture!
Through the show, a Christmas celebration at the folk music venues of the time comes to life, with a focus on the legendary "Mario's Bar." This small venue in Omonia (Ionos and Sattovriandou streets) was the daily hangout from 1946 to 1962 for the leading figures of rebetiko and folk music.
"Whoever didn't drink ouzo at Mario's is not considered a bouzouki player, they have no place in our family," famously said Markos Vamvakaris!
It was the "court of wonders," where composers, lyricists, singers, and musicians of folk music such as Markos, Tsitsanis, Papaioannou, Kalldaras, Chatzichristos, Chiotis, Mitsakis, Derveniotis, Tzouanakos, Tatasopoulos, Virvos, Papagiannopoulou, "Tsantas," Bellou, Nino, and Bithikotsis came to test their songs and listen to their first recordings.
The Christmas "Salt of the Earth" through a musical invitation to this beloved old generation reminds us that, in times of difficulty and transition, folk music has always been, for the Greeks, not just a means of entertainment and release, but a vital necessity—food for dreams and hope, a reference point for collective memory and identity.
With a selection of the most beloved classic folk songs, the festive "Salt of the Earth" invites us to sing and dance chasapika, chasaposervika, zeibekika, and karsilamades, syrta and balos, tsiftetelia as well as waltz and mambo!
Joining us are two outstanding folk ensembles:
