Based on the novel The Women in Black by Madeleine St John, the film is set in Sydney during the summer of 1959, against the backdrop of Australia's cultural awakening, the collapse of class structures, and the liberation of women. It tells the coming-of-age story of suburban student Lisa, who, while awaiting the results of her high school final exams with dreams of attending the University of Sydney, takes a summer job at a large department store. There, she works alongside a group of saleswomen who open her eyes to a world beyond her sheltered existence and foster her transformation.
