“Mikis Theodorakis-Autobiography: Special Moments of His Life and Work”

A unique cinematic record, drawn from the archives of Giorgos and Iro Sgourakis, will be presented in five one-hour episodes dedicated to the life, career, and work of Mikis Theodorakis.

Greece recognizes itself in his work, and people all over the world see him as a voice of vision, hope, peace, freedom, and justice. He shaped the generations of the 20th century and continues to be a reference point for the new generation and, surely, for those who will follow. He left a mark and identity of integrity, authentic creativity, and a cultural and political expression recognized as the true understanding of the Greek identity.

The creation of the documentary “Mikis Theodorakis – Autobiography” was a duty for Giorgos and Iro Sgourakis: a duty to historical truth and to future generations who will want to explore his timeless work and discover their own Greek uniqueness in the world, offered abundantly through his work, life, and the journey of this universl Greek, Mikis Theodorakis.

The five-hour documentary began filming in 1983, when Theodorakis was only 58, and continued with recordings of landmark concerts across Greece and the world – in ancient theaters, stadiums, concert halls, squares, and neighborhoods.

These unique recordings form a comprehensive and well-documented portrait of the vigilant thinker, the committed artist, and the creator, who spent his life passionately serving the people and elevating art through feeling, spirit, memory, and experience. For all these reasons, he is rightfully called our national composer, with worldwide recognition and acclaim. The universal Mikis Theodorakis.

The five one-hour episodes follow Theodorakis’s chronological journey and include:

Part A: "1925-1949"
Roots, Family background, Adolescence, Musical landscape 1949-1950, Musical exercises, Occupation-Athens Conservatory, Meeting Myrto, Liberation-clandestinity, Exiles-Ikaria and Makronisos, Folk song, Galatas of Chania.

Part B: "1949-1966" Chania, Athens, Marriage to Myrto, Paris, "Επιτάφιος", the Bouzouki, Folk songs, Poetry set to music, Giorgos Seferis, Iakovos Kambanellis-"Μαουτχάουζεν", "Το τραγούδι του νεκρού αδελφού", "Το Άξιον Εστί", Brendam Beham, "Όμορφη Πόλη", "Μαγική Πόλη", "Zorba the Greek" film, the Lambrakis movement, "Ρωμιοσύνη".

Part C: "1966-1970"
