The series "Routes of the Greek Diaspora" and its creators aspire to give viewers a clear picture of both the history and the great currents of mass immigration that led hundreds of thousands of Greeks to America, highlighting the great significance of the Greek Diaspora communities for Hellenism. Several uniquely different people gift their precious stories to the series. «The first arrivals» [With English subtitles]
Episode 4
Migration is a defining and determining characteristic of the United States of America since its founding. From the arrival of the first European settlers - English, French, Spanish, and Dutch - in the 17th century until today, almost without interruption, people from all over the world pursue and often achieve the famous American dream.
In the early to mid-19th century, immigrants, primarily from Ireland, Germany, and Great Britain, came to work in a wide range of professions. They faced discrimination, prejudices, and very difficult working conditions, but they laid the foundation for future waves of immigration and the rise of the United States as a hospitable melting pot of cultures and traditions.
The great wave of immigrants that came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries concerns us, as among the immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe are more than 400,000 Greeks. This episode is dedicated to these Greeks, their difficulties, challenges, and dreams.
