1968 – A Night of Farewell
It’s night at Kyveli’s house. Everyone is asleep when the phone rings—it's not good news. Kyveli learns that Georgios has passed away. The timing is inconvenient for the ruling junta, as the funeral will coincide with Panagoulis’ trial. Margarita, Sophia, and George, the children of Andreas, arrive. Fotini and Michalis prepare for their great escape. Everyone is getting ready to bid farewell to the great man who, as much as he could, shaped the fate of the country—both his family and the dictatorship.
Georgios is taken to the chapel of Evangelismos. Gouberis delivers a speech, and the regime attempts to exploit the people's emotional attachment to the political leader in every way. Kyveli refuses a state-funded funeral.
In the past:
Kyveli gives up the stage at Georgios’ request to raise their son. Papandreou announces the founding of the Democratic Party. Kyveli and Papandreou get married. She and Kotopouli are now friends. Kyveli is confronted with Georgios’ infidelities—even their neighbor in Kastri falls under his charm. The Nazi party is rising dangerously in Germany. Papandreou is exiled to Kythera, and the family falls into financial hardship. Little Giorgos develops encephalitis.
