Charilaos Maraziotis (Nikos Stavridis) is a shopkeeper who owes money to the entire market and is at risk of going to jail, both because of his creditors and due to social security (IKA) and taxes. Her secretary and fiancee, Hero, decides to arrange a wealthy marriage with a cohabitant because she is poor. The matchmaker is Antigone, who wants to marry Charilaos to her half-sister, Ismene, who, however, is in love with her peer Thano. Hero and Ismene, having learned of Charilaos's plans, conspire to prevent these unwanted developments. Charilaos is forced to play the madman and is confined to a psychiatric hospital. His creditors, once they learn of his madness, change their attitude towards him, show sympathy, and relieve him of his debts, resulting in him avoiding prison and marrying Hero.
