"Giorgos Stamatakis"
Episode 6
Giorgos Stamatakis was born in Heraklion, Crete, in 1979. He graduated from the Painting Department of the Athens School of Fine Arts in 2019, where he studied under Panos Charalambous.
His art studies include participation in the International Exchange Program at the Tokyo University of the Arts, in Shinji Ohmaki’s Sculpture Lab, during 2018 and 2019, supported by a scholarship from the Jasso organization.
Stamatakis also holds a degree in Economics (Marketing) from the University of West Attica and a degree in Journalism and Mass Media. The vivid landscapes of his Mediterranean homeland are a recurring motif in his work.
He embraces the share of responsibility that corresponds to him, as Alessandra Pace writes in her curatorial text:
“Taking the risk of a delicate balance, Stamatakis glorifies nature while simultaneously aestheticizing destruction — warning of climate change and suggesting the need for a profound cultural shift. Yet he does so through a traditional, figurative art form, following visual paths we can all understand.”
The themes he presents — paradoxically familiar to us all — are conveyed through renderings of his memories that resemble polaroid photographs. This time, they aim to awaken viewers to the dangers of atmospheric pollution.
