The new season of THE ERA OF IMAGES focuses once again on sociopolitical issues, prominent figures in artistic creation, origin stories from the Greek diaspora, the formation of collections, and works and artists who encourage and are inspired by the concept of coexistence. Highlights of the new season include, among others, South African artist of Greek descent Penny Siopis with her retrospective at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), the DEMOCRACY exhibition at the National Gallery, MOMus in Thessaloniki and the history of its collections, NEON’s Space of Togetherness exhibition at the School of Irene Papas, and the 50th Venice Biennale—a staple and pinnacle of the show since 2003.

The tour of the 60th Venice Biennale 2024 continues in the second part of the program, featuring the grand exhibition at the Arsenale, where Katerina Zacharopoulou highlights and interprets several of the showcased works.

The title of the Biennale and its main exhibition, Stranieri Ovunque / Foreigners Everywhere, originates from a series of works by the collective Claire Fontaine, whose neon installation with the phrase is displayed at the entrance of the Arsenale. Visitors are also welcomed by The Astronaut by Yinka Shonibare.

The journey unfolds through the four thematic sections defined by the Biennale’s artistic director, Adriano Pedrosa: queer artists, outsider or self-taught artists who exist on the margins of the art world, folk artists, and Indigenous artists, who are often treated as foreigners in their own countries.

Additionally, a special exhibition within the exhibition, The Archive of Disobedience, features works by 39 artists. This installation, developed since 2005, functions as an evolving moving-image archive, divided into two main themes: the activism of the diaspora and gender disobedience.
