A documentary film based on the book Twice a Stranger by journalist Bruce Clark and the ERT television series of the same name. It examines the population exchanges in the Balkans during the early 20th century, culminating in the forced exchanges of 1923–1924.
The documentary revisits the displacements of various ethnic groups accompanying the disintegration of the multiethnic Ottoman Empire and the emergence of homogeneous nation-states. It seeks to explain the decision behind the Greek-Turkish population exchange imposed by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
It delves into the impacts of forced migration, highlighting the displacement of Muslims from Greece and Greek Orthodox Christians from Turkey after the destruction of Smyrna. Through personal testimonies of refugees, parallel stories emerge of Greek-speaking Muslims from Western Macedonia or Crete and Greeks from Asia Minor and Cappadocia who endured the shared trauma of uprooting.
The film also includes interviews with experts, historians, and sociologists, such as university professors Iakovos Michailidis, Paschalis Kitromilides, Thanos Veremis, Konstantinos Fotiadis, René Hirschon, Ayhan Aktar, and authors Bruce Clark and Giles Milton. They analyze topics such as the Greek landing in Smyrna, Eleftherios Venizelos's nationalist policies, the Turkish nationalist movement, and the economic, social, and cultural consequences of the exchange.
The narratives are accompanied by rare archival footage and photographic material, enriching the historical context of the events.
