"Folk feast at 'The Scala of Milan' in Volos!"
The show "Salt of the Earth" and Lampros Liavas invite us to a folk feast - a tribute to the famous "Scala of Milan" in Volos.
The taverna "The Scala, café and tavern" is connected to three generations of the Milanos family, spanning over 120 years. It all started in 1885, from the grocery tavern of Nikos Milanos in Portaria, which was transferred in 1919 from to Volos by his son Stefanos, who, in turn, passed it on to his three sons: Karolos, Nikos and Stathis Milanos. Until its closing in 2006, this small tavern had been a point of reference for folk song and culture, a unique "music school and school of life" for its regular customers! In "The Scala", the Milanos family would serve appetizers along with... songs, while playing the bouzouki, guitar and baglamas "straight up" (without amplification), improvising with the customers who crowded the few tables there. Karolos Milanos was an exceptional bouzouki virtuoso and composer, while his brother, Nikos, flawlessly accompanied him with his folk guitar, and Stathis taught the younger generation of bouzouki players. Many famous representatives of the folk song passed through "The Scala" hangout to listen to the Milanos brothers and play with them: Vamvakaris, Tsitsanis, Pagioumtzis, Papaioannou, Kaldaras, Charmas, Gavalas, Bithikotsis, Lemonopoulos, Zagoraios...
The show presents the long history of the Milanos family and features a series of folk songs that illustrate the musical climate, the distinct style and the ethos of "The Scala". Among them are compositions by Karolos Milanos, some extremely popular rebetiko songs, and some less known "gems" from their rich repertoire.
Researcher and producer, Paris Mitsou, discusses the importance of "The Scala" in folk songs, while Giorgos Xintaris recalls some vivid memories from when he was a regular customer of the legendary tavern. Together with his sons and musical associates, they take it upon themselves to convey the feeling of a folk Volos’ feast at "The Scala", followed by the obligatory tsipouro and appetizers, while also acquainting us to the "culture of the tsipouro taverns", which was brought to Volos by the refugees of Asia Minor.
With the participation of musicians: Giorgos Xintaris (bouzouki-vocals), Antonis Xintaris (guitar-vocals), Thodoris Xintaris (bouzouki-baglamas-vocals), Giorgos Anagnostou (bouzouki) and Dimos Viougioukas (accordion).
