News / Biography

"Monogramma" has uniquely recorded the individuals who have marked the intellectual, cultural, and artistic trajectory of our country with their presence and work. It has been characterized as a "National Archive" by the press, and for the first time in 2012, the Academy of Athens recognized and awarded audiovisual work, awarding producers and directors George and Ero Sgourakis the Academy of Athens Award for their entire body of work, particularly for "Monogramma." The reasoning behind this was that "…their biographical programs constitute a valuable portrait of Greeks who acted in the past but also in our era and created, as it was characterized, a work "for the next generations".
The idea of creating this series came from producer-director George Sgourakis, to present the life, work, and worldview of individuals who act in the intellectual, cultural, artistic, social, and public spheres, in an autobiographical format so that there is no interference and the cinematic document is preserved in its purest form.
The format of each episode aims at presenting the autobiographical (visual and audio recording) of an individual who operates in the intellectual, artistic, cultural, political, social, and public life, in a way that engages the interest of contemporary viewers.

Today: "Kostas Tsoklis" Part II

The episode is dedicated to the visual artist and creator Kostas Tsoclis, culminating with the screening of its second part.
Kostas Tsoclis immersed himself in the trends of contemporary art in Europe, where he lived after graduating from the Athens School of Fine Arts: initially for two years in Rome, then for twenty-four years in Paris, and two years in Berlin.
An inexhaustible source of creativity and inspiration, his body of work reflects his passionate cultivation of art and his prominent presence at the forefront of artistic innovation. He systematically experimented with various means of expression: painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installations, video, performance, light, water, and sound, exploring new ways of approaching objects, nature, myths, and social issues.
A milestone in his relentless artistic exploration was his participation in the 1986 Venice Biennale, where he represented Greece with works such as The Speared Fish and Portraits, paintings on which video-recorded images were projected. These works proposed the concept of "living painting," which he further developed in 1990 by introducing specific viewing durations into visual art, as exemplified in the multifaceted production Medea, presented at the Cadran Solaire in Troyes, France.
Kostas Tsoclis has held 110 solo exhibitions in major European and American cities, in museums, public spaces, and galleries, and has also participated in the most prestigious international group exhibitions.
His works adorn public spaces such as the courtyard of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Ethniki Amyna Metro Station in Athens (an underground park).
In 2011, the "Kostas Tsoclis Museum" was inaugurated in the village of Kampos on Tinos, the island he cherished as a second homeland. He also created an impressive theater in the Koumaros area of Tinos.
