"Dionysian Epiphany in the villages of Drama - The celebrations for a good year and fertility"
The traditional Twelve Days of Christmas rituals in Northern Greece culminate in the villages of Drama on January 6th, 7th, and 8th. These celebrations feature Dionysian disguises and ancient customs that honor the New Year and fertility.
Inspired by these folk festivities, Lambros Liavas welcomes to "Salt of the Earth” a large musical and dance group representing seven key villages of the region: Monastiraki, Volakas, Petrousa, Kali Vrysi, Pagoneri, Xiropotamos, and Pyrgos. The cultural associations of these villages have established the "Cultural Development Center of Eastern Macedonia", with its activities highlighted by the center's president, Yiannis Papoutsis.
Professor Christos Papakostas discusses the unique dances of the local inhabitants, accompanied by primordial Macedonian lyres, bagpipes, daires (tambourines), and songs, including the exceptional polyphonic women's songs from Volakas.
Alongside the local musicians’ troupes, members of the active Lyceum of Greek Women of Drama perform under the guidance of Dimitris Gikas, while the Lyceum's president, Anna Dinaki-Kondylaki, shares insights into the local traditions and gastronomy.
The show concludes with a spectacular "invasion" of the costumed bell-wearers: “Bambougera” from Kali Vrysi, “Harapia” from Volakas and Pagoneri, “Bears” from Volakas and Pyrgos, and “Arapides” from Monastiraki, Petrousa, and Xiropotamos!
