News / Biography

"Monogramma" has uniquely recorded the individuals who have marked the intellectual, cultural, and artistic trajectory of our country with their presence and work. It has been characterized as a "National Archive" by the press, and for the first time in 2012, the Academy of Athens recognized and awarded audiovisual work, awarding producers and directors George and Ero Sgourakis the Academy of Athens Award for their entire body of work, particularly for "Monogramma." The reasoning behind this was that "…their biographical programs constitute a valuable portrait of Greeks who acted in the past but also in our era and created, as it was characterized, a work "for the next generations".
The idea of creating this series came from producer-director George Sgourakis, to present the life, work, and worldview of individuals who act in the intellectual, cultural, artistic, social, and public spheres, in an autobiographical format so that there is no interference and the cinematic document is preserved in its purest form.
The format of each episode aims at presenting the autobiographical (visual and audio recording) of an individual who operates in the intellectual, artistic, cultural, political, social, and public life, in a way that engages the interest of contemporary viewers.

Today: "Giorgos Arvanitis - Director of Photography"

Giorgos Arvanitis can be described as a creator, a poet of the image, a man who became synonymous with some of the greatest and most significant moments in Greek cinema on an international level as a director of photography. He was born in the mountainous village of Dilofo in Phthiotis and experienced the tragic years of the Civil War when his father joined the resistance and his mother was sentenced to 8 years in the "Averoff" prison.

He was raised by relatives in Athens and studied electrical engineering. He became fascinated by cinema and wanted to study acting, although he didn’t complete those studies. With persistence, he found himself on film sets, where his cinematic journey began—one that led him to work as an assistant cameraman alongside the great photographers-teachers, Giorgos Kavayas and Nikos Gardelis. His abilities and talent were recognized by the patriarch of Greek cinema, Filopoimen Finos, who gave him the opportunity to shoot his first film—a color CinemaScope film—directed by Giannis Dalianidis.

The rest is history, with collaborations with Theodoros Angelopoulos (The Reconstruction, Days of ’36, The Travelling Players, Alexander the Great, etc.), Dinos Dimopoulos, Pantelis Voulgaris, Michalis Cacoyannis, and more.

His filmography includes 105 feature films, TV series, short films, and documentaries.

22 years ago, Giorgos Arvanitis decided to expand his horizons in the international market, utilizing his recognition as a global cinema figure, leaving his personal mark and distinctive aesthetic that makes him stand out as a director of photography.

His autobiographical film was shot in Paris, where he has lived and worked for the past 22 years. With the humility and integrity that have characterized his entire life, he speaks about his creative work in Greece, his decision to seek (and of course, achieve) international recognition.

He has won awards at the Venice Film Festival and in Chicago, was nominated for the European Oscars (Félix), and let us also remember the 8 photography awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

The foreword is by producer Giorgos Sgourakis.
