"Monogramma" has uniquely recorded the individuals who have marked the intellectual, cultural, and artistic trajectory of our country with their presence and work. It has been characterized as a "National Archive" by the press, and for the first time in 2012, the Academy of Athens recognized and awarded audiovisual work, awarding producers and directors George and Ero Sgourakis the Academy of Athens Award for their entire body of work, particularly for "Monogramma." The reasoning behind this was that "…their biographical programs constitute a valuable portrait of Greeks who acted in the past but also in our era and created, as it was characterized, a work "for the next generations".
The idea of creating this series came from producer-director George Sgourakis, to present the life, work, and worldview of individuals who act in the intellectual, cultural, artistic, social, and public spheres, in an autobiographical format so that there is no interference and the cinematic document is preserved in its purest form.
The format of each episode aims at presenting the autobiographical (visual and audio recording) of an individual who operates in the intellectual, artistic, cultural, political, social, and public life, in a way that engages the interest of contemporary viewers.
Today:
"Christoforos Charalambakis"
Professor Christoforos Charalambakis, a Linguistics professor at the University of Athens, has been studying the historical trajectory and evolution of Greek, the oldest language in Europe, for over forty years. Deeply rooted in the linguistic and folk traditions of Crete, he delved into the secrets of orality, studied Modern Greek dialects, and demonstrated how our distinguished poets, foremost among them Dionysios Solomos, revitalized the Modern Greek literary language by drawing from the speech of the common people in rural areas.
He studied the language of prominent Modern Greek writers, including notable figures such as Makriyannis, Papadiamantis, Kondylakis, Palamas, Kazantzakis, Prevelakis, Seferis, and Elytis.
Professor Charalambakis was born in Anatoli, Ierapetra, Crete, studied at the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens, and pursued postgraduate studies at the Universities of Cologne and Heidelberg, where he was awarded a PhD from the University of Cologne.
He spent long periods in Germany, England, the United States, and Australia, giving him the opportunity to study languages, peoples, and cultures, and to incorporate his research on the Greek language into a broader theoretical framework.
For many years, he served as a professor of linguistics at the University of Crete, and today he teaches at the University of Athens. His life's work is the new printed and electronic "Useful Dictionary of Modern Greek," commissioned by the Academy of Athens, which he has been working on in recent years. This important project is an extensive electronic database that reflects the dynamism and expressive richness of our language.
