Thousands of pages have been written about Greek cinema, and even more has been said. From the beginnings of the interwar Greek film industry to today's digital image reality, everyone arrives at a common conclusion: The cinematography of Greek films has always been one of the strongest assets of domestic cinema. Greek directors of photography have left a very distinctive mark, and the level of their work has been recognized internationally countless times.
How have they experienced the changes in Greek cinema from the wartime years to today? How do they work with directors? What are the relationships that develop within the framework of a film? Is there such a thing as the famous "Greek" light?
In the episodes of this series, we watch them describe their lives in cinema, see excerpts from their films, listen to their descriptions and revelations, and get to know their work through rare photographs from film shoots.
Today:
«Nikos Kavoukidis»
Nikos Kavoukidis is the cinematographer who seamlessly connected the old commercial cinema with the new, being equally respected and accepted in both eras. He excelled in both color and black-and-white cinema and was highly sought after as the preferred photographer of major female stars, as he had the ability to highlight their advantages and conceal the flaws of their faces. His stories about his collaborations with Paxinou or Lambeti are unique, as are those about Finos. He speaks about the conditions of the New Greek Cinema, where he was a pioneer, assisting significant directors with their first films, such as Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Pantelis Voulgaris, Vangelis Serdaris, and others. Of historical significance is the documentary "Testimonies," which he made by filming political events over a decade. For the past 30 years, he has been the exclusive collaborator of Nikos Koundouros. In the show, we also have the opportunity to see rare archival material, many excerpts from his films, and hear from Nikos Koundouros and Pantelis Voulgaris about Nikos Kavoukidis.
