Ermoupolis, Syros, 1895. A Syrian landlord, seduced by the urging of his local MP, sells his property and buys shares in industry. He then emigrates to Athens in search of a better life for his wife and seven children. The days go by, the money runs out and the MP's promises turn out to be false. Starving and unemployed, having lost all his money, he manages to get hired as an undertaker in the cemetery of his neighborhood...
