The show travels to Syros and illuminates the challenging early years of his life when he dropped out of school and started working to support his family. His musical influences on the island and his love for the bouzouki became evident, and soon, with his songs, he would change the course of rebetiko.

'The Time Machine' reveals unknown aspects of Markos Vamvakaris' personal life, as he had two marriages and clashed with the Catholic Church. He even wrote in his biography that he was excommunicated and forbidden from participating in the sacrament of the Holy Communion.

In the 1950s, Vamvakaris fell into obscurity as he suffered from deformative arthritis in his hands, and rebetiko songs were no longer in vogue. He was forced to wash dishes to support his family. A traumatic experience occurred when he was kicked out of a venue because they preferred to listen to music from the jukebox.
