"Lake Karla"
Episode 10
Lake Karla or Voiviida as it was formerly called, was the largest lake in Greece until it was dried up in 1962. Today, its restoration is one of the largest ecological projects in Greece.
In recent years, Karla has become a true meeting place where hundreds of birds coexist. Life resurfaced, and both fauna and flora have begun to serve the propagation of creatures and plants.
The traditional village of Kanalia is built amphitheatrically with a panoramic view of both the lake and the plain. The village has always had a poetic relationship with the lake because it has lived and grown by it. The ecological significance and history of the age-old lake have influenced the culture of the inhabitants.
In the village, there are two museums, one belonging to the management body of the Area of Karla-Mavrovouni-Kefalovrisos and the Museum of the Karla Lake Culture with impressive exhibits on the life of fishermen and the biodiversity of the lake.
