It all starts in the 1830s when young George Stephenson engineered the first locomotive, and the first railway networks followed up before long. The railway becomes a key factor in the development of both the trade and the military power of countries, offering the possibility of rapid transportation of troops and munitions. Thus, railways spread out rapidly in Europe and soon enough reach our country as well.

The liberation of Thessaly from Ottoman rule will prove fertile ground for the development of both rich agriculture in the region and an extensive commercial network. As a large number of wealthy Greek landowners flock to Thessaly from Istanbul, the need arises for a mode of transportation able of delivering the huge quantities of goods produced to the central cities and ports of the region; because of this situation, the first railway networks in Thessaly will soon see the day. The common denominator of all these networks is the station of Volos. The networks of the Thessaly Railways will be spread from Volos to Larissa, Velestino, Trikala and Kalambaka; soon, the rich soils of the mountainous areas of Pelion will lead to new commercial rail connections.
