A poor, hardworking employee named Fotis has been engaged to Mary for many years, but they cannot get married due to a lack of money. All the obstacles keep piling up for him: the pressure from Mary's brother to marry quickly because he will give her to someone else, combined with the letter he receives from his village stating that his mother is sick and needs surgery, make him 'run around without getting anywhere.
He will turn to everyone for money, but no one can give him any. Until one of his cousins, who owns a cabaret, suggests he enter into a fake marriage, in exchange for money, with a Spanish singer named Chiquita Lopez, who is at risk of deportation. Fotis agrees.
Fotis' decision creates friction in his relationship with Mary. However, Chiquita's hasty departure abroad and his mother's recovery without surgery allow him to keep the money he earned from the sham marriage and live a good life with Mary.
